Several months ago I rediscovered the benefits of falling asleep to soothing music. It had been a while since I’d done that, but a period of restless nights had prompted me to explore avenues that might offer help. Naturally everyone’s tastes and needs are different, but I found that what worked best for me was music that didn’t have much in the way of melody, and in fact maintained a prominent drone throughout. I’d experimented with different artists in the broad new age and ambient genres, and many in the field of binaural beats and isochronic tones, and enjoyed not only much of the music but also reading about the philosophies and sciences behind the creation of the pieces.
However, it wasn’t often that I was completely pleased, and truly the amount of music I was ingesting & the time of day (bedtime) that I was ingesting it made the cataloging of the things I did enjoy rather difficult. Well, what’s a guy to do? Make his own, right? Right.
I’ve been leaning in this direction and so had a little experience in making this type of music and in enhancing it with *science* somewhat as I had bits of background studies under my belt already. Not that I really understand it all, or even consistently implement the things that I do understand, but life is an adventure and a journey and we should all pursue the things we enjoy, yes?

There’s some discussion going around that music tuned to 432Hz instead of our standard 440Hz is more in line with the natural rhythms of our bodies (and minds and souls and cells, and perhaps the whole universe, Ursula!), so I had everything tuned to that frequency for this recording. Does it make a difference? I don’t know.
There’s also some speculation that flat musical notes help induce sleep. With that in mind, this piece is in G flat. Again, no idea if it makes any difference, but I will say that I’ve had full and restful sleep from listening to this one. So there.
And that’s really all this go-round. No subtle beats or special frequency manipulation. Just a simple drone-tune to provide helpful sleep ambience.
I’ve got an iPhone and I’d like to explain what for me is the optimal way to use this drone for sleep, in case you’re uncertain of or need some help navigating the phone well enough to give this a try. I keep the phone on the nightstand by the bed, where it charges overnight and serves as my alarm clock. You should at least turn wifi off before sleeping, just so you aren’t having all kinds of crazy networking frequencies dancing around so close to your head while you sleep. I generally put mine in Airplane Mode, which turns off both wifi and the cell phone network.
Next, I open the song in the Music player and select to have the song repeat. This one’s just under seven minutes long, and I’ve found that I prefer the music to play well into my sleepy time, so repetition here is good. I don’t, however, want the song to play all night long so I open the Clock app and set a timer for an hour and a half, and select the option to “Stop Playing” when the timer ends. Finally, I set the volume to a level that doesn’t let the sound overwhelm the quiet ambience of the room, but allows it to mingle with those open spaces of quiet and the filling noise of the house and the neighborhood. Now I’m set to drift blissfully off to dreamland!
