planet earth is blue….

*I suppose I should say up front here that this song isn’t particularly inspired by David Bowie, but he’s mentioned in it briefly and…oh, just read the post, won’t ya?*

It’s hard to believe how quickly five years can go by, and yet how distant the events in that time can seem. But that’s how long it’s been since I abandoned my habit/project of recording at least one song a month and tossing it into the air to flutter about for a bit and watch where it eventually landed, if it did at all.

The first time I committed to doing this – fifteen years ago – I decided to collect the songs all together on a disc at year’s end and hand them out to sympathetic friends. It was 2001 and so the Kubrick film was somewhat front of mind, and therefore the wordplay of Bowie’s Space Oddity as well. With those two things in mind, it seemed like a fun idea to make a play on that and call my collection A Case of the Tea (a rhyming pun on the Bowie album title).

I told my plan to Mau, and he had the genius idea of trying a photoshoot to mimic the Bowie album cover. Ah!

So it wasn’t long before I shuffled up to Brooklyn with a cheap red wig, and Mau and I went in search of fashion for the back cover. We finally found a little shop at closing time that had the closest thing to a starman-looking jumpsuit that we’d seen. Trouble is, it was a little small and I couldn’t zip the thing up all the way. “Nevermind, it’s a sitting shot so we’ll just keep it open,” and I could indeed sit in it without stretching the fabric or ripping it. Excellent.

Rental transaction completed, we hustled back to Mau’s where a girl named Sara shaped up the wig and made up the me a bit, and soon we were shooting. I must tell you: being a model isn’t very fun. One may have the occasional dream that it’s a piece of cake, but it ain’t easy. And while Mau did a great job of taking and editing the shots, I could never quite capture the great one’s aura. But, oh well…have a look:

The final result was an 18-song CD which included a few tunes that went on to be upgraded for later releases, and some that I had all but forgotten about until today when I pulled the info out to write this post. One of the songs – which appeared on the Hoga-Rama EP in 2004 – is called 3 Minute Pop Songs, which you can listen to in all its ragged glory at the top of this article. It’s basically just a celebration of music I love, and Herr Bowie is mentioned in there as well. He will never cease to be an inspiration.

LYRICS

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
it’s also measured out in cigarettes and tea
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
and maybe eno’s shirts if he’d give some to me

don’t go changing that radio station
don’t go touching your little dial
unless you put on that glass compilation
any song yeah i don’t care at all….

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
by the magnetic fields, the soft boys and lou reed
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
by stockholm monsters and that fishy jbc

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
just like the smiths and maybe early morrissey
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
i even like that moody stuff on 4ad

don’t go changing that radio station
don’t go touching your little dial
unless you put on young popular & sexy
i always liked that railway children song

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
one’s rebel rebel by david bowie
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
by all the davy jones & all the monkees

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
just like joao gilberto’s simple joie de vivre
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
it’s not a boast but i will say the marble tea too

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
the beatles, jojo, liz phair & the raspberries
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
the monochrome set & of course the go-betweens

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
smokey, stevie & hey memphis tennessee
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
le disque du crepescule & facta-factory

my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
my life is measured out in 3 minute pop songs
